Federal Government Retains 16 Years as Minimum Admission Age

The Federal Government has retained sixteen years as the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, made the announcement during the twenty twenty-six Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions held in Abuja.

According to the minister, the decision followed extensive consultations and policy reviews with major stakeholders in the education sector.

He explained that the policy is intended to balance academic readiness with inclusivity in Nigeria’s tertiary education system.

Alausa noted that exceptionally gifted candidates who meet admission requirements before the age of sixteen may still be considered, but only under clearly defined and strictly enforced guidelines.

The minister added that the framework is designed to ensure that early admissions do not affect the maturity and preparedness expected for tertiary education.

He also announced new policy adjustments for Education and Agriculture-related programmes, where candidates may now benefit from more flexible admission considerations.

The policy meeting is also reviewing admission guidelines, institutional quotas, and cut-off marks for the twenty twenty-six Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
