Nigeria records 30 cases of circulating variant poliovirus in 2026

Nigeria has recorded 30 cases of circulating variant poliovirus in 2026, prompting renewed efforts by the Federal Government and traditional institutions to strengthen immunisation campaigns and stop further spread of the disease.

Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Muyi Aina, disclosed this during a quarterly review meeting of the Northern Traditional Leaders Committee on Primary Health Care Delivery in Abuja.

According to him, the cases include 27 linked to circulating variant poliovirus type two and three linked to type three. He said intensified interventions are already ongoing in high-risk states including Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara.

Dr. Aina noted that immunisation campaigns have improved in quality, coverage, and data reporting, with Katsina, Kaduna, and Yobe states recording zero polio cases this year, while Borno State has achieved an 86 percent reduction in infections.

He also revealed that more than 65 thousand cases of non-compliance were recorded during recent immunisation campaigns across 15 states, with over 70 percent already resolved through community engagement efforts.

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, said the Federal Government is strengthening collaboration to improve vaccine uptake and primary healthcare delivery across the country.

He stressed the importance of traditional and religious leaders in addressing vaccine hesitancy, especially in rural communities.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar the Third, and the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Mera, reaffirmed the commitment of traditional institutions to support government efforts aimed at ending polio transmission in Nigeria.

The World Health Organization and Rotary International also urged sustained commitment to ensure political activities do not disrupt ongoing polio eradication campaigns.
