Ogun Government Activates Emergency Response Over Chemical Odour Incident in Ijebu Ode

The Ogun State Government has activated emergency environmental and public health response measures following another chemical odour incident in Ijebu Ode, which affected more than ninety students across several schools.

The affected schools include Our Lady of Apostles Girls School, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode Grammar School, and Sambadola Private School. Many of the students were rushed to hospitals after complaining of abdominal pain and related health symptoms.

Top government officials, including the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, visited affected students receiving treatment and appealed to residents to remain calm as investigations continue.



The General Manager of the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency, Kehinde Bello, disclosed that air quality monitoring devices installed in the area detected elevated concentrations of methane gas, with peak readings reaching about thirteen thousand, five hundred parts per million in some locations.

According to Bello, although the gas concentration remains below the explosive limit, the situation is environmentally significant and requires urgent technical investigation and precautionary measures.

He added that the government has deployed a multi-agency response team made up of environmental experts, emergency management officials, public health professionals, and air quality specialists to determine the source of the odour and recommend necessary actions.

Residents have been advised to avoid open flames in affected areas and immediately seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headaches, or breathing difficulties.

The Ogun State Government says it remains committed to protecting public health and will continue to provide verified updates as investigations progress.
