World Football Day: Ogun SWAN Calls for Greater Investment in Football Development

The Ogun State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria has joined the global football community in celebrating the 2026 World Football Day with the theme, “The Transformative Power of Football.”

In a statement, the Chairman of Ogun SWAN, Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, described football as a strong instrument for unity, peace, youth empowerment, and economic development.

He said football continues to bridge cultural, ethnic, and religious differences while inspiring young people to embrace discipline, teamwork, and leadership.

Comrade Ogunsiji noted that beyond entertainment, football creates opportunities for talent discovery, job creation, national integration, and community development.

The SWAN Chairman also stressed the important role of sports journalists in promoting the positive values of football through responsible reportage and support for grassroots sports development.

He called on governments, corporate organizations, football administrators, and other stakeholders to invest more in sports infrastructure and youth development programmes to strengthen football development in Nigeria.

Comrade Ogunsiji further urged young footballers and sports enthusiasts to uphold the values of hard work, discipline, fairness, and sportsmanship.

He reaffirmed Ogun SWAN’s commitment to supporting sports development and initiatives aimed at promoting football and other sporting activities across Ogun State and Nigeria.
