Abeokuta North Chairman Pledges Greater Support for Secondary School Sports Festival

The Executive Chairman of Abeokuta North Local Government, Dr. Lanre Oyegbola-Sodipo, has reaffirmed the council's commitment to the development of grassroots sports following the successful grand finale of the Secondary School Sports Festival.


Speaking at the event held at the school field of Crescent University, Abeokuta, the Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo gave glory to God for the success recorded and expressed optimism that the festival would continue to grow into one of the best school sports competitions in the state.

He noted that although there is still much work to be done, the local government remains committed to encouraging and supporting the organisers and participating schools.

 According to Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo, the initiative has started on a modest scale, but plans are already underway to expand and improve future editions of the competition.

Dr. Oyegbola-Sodipo added that the council will continue to provide the necessary support to ensure the festival nurtures young sporting talents and promotes healthy competition among secondary schools in Abeokuta North.


Contributing, Sports Coordinators  of Abeokuta South Local Government Secondary Schools, Comrade Abiodun Abioye and his counterpart from Ewekoro Local government, Ariyibi Benson noted that age cheating had continued to deny many young and deserving athletes the opportunity to develop their potential.
 
Speaking in the same vein,  the Principal of Ansarudeen  Grammar School, Isaga Orile, Mrs. Ogunpola Adebola, appealed to parents and teachers to work together in identifying, mentoring and nurturing talented students through regular coaching and school competitions.


In a reaction, the Chairman of the South-West Zone of the Nigeria School Sports Federation, Comrade Okeleye Olarotimi, described school sports as the bedrock of national sports development. 

He gave the assurance that the Federation would work with relevant stakeholders to address the challenge of age falsification through regular competitions.
