Eight Foreign Nationals Arrested Over Alleged Ransom Fraud

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested eight foreign nationals for allegedly staging a fake kidnapping and demanding ransom from family members abroad.

The suspects were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation in Adiyan Town, Agbado area of Ogun State by detectives from the Ifo Divisional Police Headquarters.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the investigation began after a 23-year-old Mauritanian national, Cheik El-Mehdi, reportedly contacted his family overseas, claiming he had been kidnapped in Nigeria and requesting ransom for his release.

Police say another suspect, Zakaria Zawadogo, allegedly backed the claim by threatening that the victim would be killed if the ransom was not paid.

Acting on intelligence gathered, detectives tracked down Zawadogo and uncovered the syndicate's hideout, where seven other foreign nationals were arrested.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the kidnapping was allegedly staged to defraud the victim's family, with the supposed victim found to have actively participated in the scheme.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, has commended the detectives for exposing the criminal network and reaffirmed the command's commitment to combating organised crime across the state.
