Ogun Government Links Ijebu-Ode Gas Emission to Geological Activity



The Ogun State Government has attributed the recent gas emissions in Ijebu-Ode and surrounding communities to natural underground geological activities, dismissing claims that the phenomenon is linked to traditional myths or beliefs.

Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya, disclosed this at a stakeholders' town hall meeting held in Ijebu-Ode. 

Dr Oresanya said scientific investigations identified the gases as methane and hydrogen sulphide, originating from underground fractures along the Ifewara–Zungeru fault line, which passes through parts of Ogun, Osun and Niger states.






According to him, further studies are underway to determine the exact source of the gases and whether the area sits on commercially viable natural gas deposits.

Also speaking, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, urged residents not to panic but to observe safety measures, including covering their noses with a wet handkerchief during gas emissions and contacting the state's emergency health line when necessary.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Education, Professor Abayomi Arigbadu, assured parents that schools temporarily closed because of the incident would reopen after consultations with school authorities and safety assessments.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Department of Earth Sciences at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Professor Philip Ikhane, appealed for calm and advised residents to avoid activities such as indiscriminate borehole drilling and quarry blasting, which could worsen underground fault-line disturbances.

Community stakeholders commended the state government for its prompt response and encouraged residents to comply with official safety guidelines.
