Poor UTME Performance Linked to Lack of CBT Facilities, Says Crescent University VC

The Vice-Chancellor of Crescent University, Professor Ibraheem Gbajabiamila, has attributed the poor performance of candidates in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, to inadequate access to Computer-Based Testing facilities and insufficient preparation by many students.

Professor Gbajabiamila made the observation while speaking at 5th Physics Day organised by the Department of Physics, College of Natural and Applied Sciences Crescent University Abeokuta.

 He expressed concern over the large number of candidates who scored below 160 in the examination, describing the situation as a reflection of deeper challenges within the nation's education sector.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the increasing reliance on Computer-Based Testing has exposed gaps in educational infrastructure, as many schools lack functional computer laboratories, stable electricity and internet connectivity. 

He noted that some students sit for major examinations with little or no prior exposure to CBT practice.


Professor Gbajabiamila stressed that lowering admission cut-off marks is not a sustainable solution to the problem. Instead, he called for greater investment in educational facilities and improved learning environments to better prepare students for modern assessment methods.


The Crescent University Vice-Chancellor also described recent education statistics in the country as a wake-up call for stakeholders, while commending parents and teachers who continue to support quality education despite prevailing challenges.

He further praised Crescent University students for their academic achievements, particularly those in the Faculty of Law, citing outstanding performances at the Nigerian Law School and participation in international competitions.


Professor Gbajabiamila urged policymakers to restore Nigeria's educational standards and competitiveness, while encouraging young Nigerians to embrace science, innovation and education as tools for national development.
