President Tinubu approves N10 billion emergency fund to strengthen Ebola preparedness.

 


President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved ten billion naira in emergency funding to boost Nigeria’s preparedness against Ebola and other emerging public health threats.

The fund is expected to strengthen the operational capacity of the National Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, and support critical emergency response activities nationwide.

Presidential Spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, said that the President has also constituted a Presidential Task Force on Ebola, chaired by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila. 


The committee comprises representatives of relevant ministries, departments and agencies, as well as state governments.

According to the statement, the decision followed a high-level stakeholders’ meeting to assess Nigeria’s readiness and develop strategies to prevent the importation of Ebola into the country.

President Tinubu has directed states with international airports and border corridors, alongside relevant agencies, to submit their preparedness plans, funding requirements and intervention needs for coordinated implementation.

As part of immediate measures, authorities will intensify passenger screening at international airports, enhance monitoring of travellers arriving through high-risk routes, and activate referral and isolation centres at the Lagos and Abuja international airports.

The government will also introduce mandatory QR code-based pre-arrival health declarations for passengers from designated high-risk countries, while airport facilities will undergo routine disinfection as a precautionary measure.

The President further directed the Task Force to work with security, diplomatic and aviation authorities on possible regulations for flights from affected countries and the designation of specific terminals for high-risk passengers.

The measures come amid reports of renewed Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
