Abiodun Seeks Judicial, Funding Reforms for State Police

 



Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has called for major judicial, financial and institutional reforms to ensure the proposed State Police system succeeds.

Speaking at the THISDAY/ARISE TV Town Hall Meeting on the State Police Bill, Governor Abiodun praised President Bola Tinubu for supporting the decentralisation of policing, describing him as a committed federalist.

The governor said the proposed law should address the challenges facing the Nigeria Police Force and clearly define how federal and state police would work together.

He noted that the creation of state police could lead to more arrests and prosecutions, making it necessary to strengthen the judiciary for faster trials. 


The governor also suggested the establishment of State Courts of Appeal to reduce delays in handling certain cases.


Governor Abiodun urged policymakers to tackle the root causes of insecurity, including farmers-herders conflicts, saying this would improve security and boost agricultural production.

On funding, he warned that differences in states' financial capacities could affect the effectiveness of state police. 


He called for a fair funding formula that combines internally generated revenue with federal allocations to enable all states to sustain their police services.

The governor also proposed independent Police Complaints Commissions at both federal and state levels to promote accountability and prevent abuse of power.

 He further supported fixed tenures for State Commissioners of Police to protect them from political interference.

Governor Abiodun expressed confidence that continued consultations would help lawmakers produce a strong State Police law that meets the security needs of Nigerians.

Ogun Opens Registration for 2027 Hajj Exercise

Aina Obasanjo  The Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has commenced registration for the 2027 Hajj exercise, calling on intending pilgrims to begin preparations for the pilgrimage. Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Taiwo Ajibola, made the announcement while speaking with journalists at the Board's office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.  Alhaji Ajibola said prospective pilgrims are required to make an initial deposit of eight million naira, pending the official Hajj fare to be announced by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. He urged interested applicants to complete their payments early to secure a place for the pilgrimage, noting that the registration exercise is expected to close on or before September 2026. Alhaji Ajibola advised intending pilgrims to visit the Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board at the New Secretariat, Block B, Governor's Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, or contact the Board through its official telephone lines for further enquiries.
