I Am Proud to Be Called Ifagbayi’ – Ogun Commissioner Speaks on Faith and Heritage

The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Ogun State, Hon.Sesan Fagbayi, has reaffirmed his pride in his traditional Yoruba name despite being a Christian pastor.

The name “Ifagbayi,” which loosely means “Ifa has done something great,” carries a deep cultural reference to the Yoruba divination tradition.


Addressing concerns that such names contradict Christian values, the commissioner said cultural identity should not be abandoned because of religious affiliation.

“I am a pastor, but I am also a son of the soil,” he explained. “Our culture defines us and tells the story of who we were before outside influences reshaped our society.”

Hon.Fagbayi emphasized that his responsibility as the state’s cultural and tourism commissioner requires him to maintain a strong connection with the traditions that shape the identity of the Gateway State.

His remarks highlight a broader conversation across Africa, where many professionals struggle to reconcile Western religious expectations with indigenous naming traditions.

According to supporters, faith should improve cultural values rather than erase them entirely.

Ogun Opens Registration for 2027 Hajj Exercise

Aina Obasanjo  The Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has commenced registration for the 2027 Hajj exercise, calling on intending pilgrims to begin preparations for the pilgrimage. Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Taiwo Ajibola, made the announcement while speaking with journalists at the Board's office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.  Alhaji Ajibola said prospective pilgrims are required to make an initial deposit of eight million naira, pending the official Hajj fare to be announced by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. He urged interested applicants to complete their payments early to secure a place for the pilgrimage, noting that the registration exercise is expected to close on or before September 2026. Alhaji Ajibola advised intending pilgrims to visit the Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board at the New Secretariat, Block B, Governor's Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, or contact the Board through its official telephone lines for further enquiries.
