Nigerian Runners to Battle for Top Honours at Great Abeokuta 10KM Race

Nigerian long-distance runners will compete for top honours as the Great Abeokuta 10-Kilometre Race returns on Saturday, September 26, 2026, after a one-year break.


Organisers of the event, Nilayo Sports Management Limited, say this year's edition will be exclusively for Nigerian athletes in a bid to promote and reward homegrown talent.


Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, said despite limiting the competition to local participants, the organisers have retained the full elite prize purse, giving Nigerian runners the opportunity to compete for the same rewards previously won by international athletes.


She noted that the initiative is aimed at empowering Nigerian athletes and strengthening the country's long-distance running tradition.


The race will take runners through the historic streets of Abeokuta along the established 10-kilometre route.


Registration, which commenced on July 15, is free. Interested participants can register online through the official race website, Abeokutamarathon.com, or obtain registration forms at designated centres across Abeokuta, including the MKO Abiola Stadium.


Organisers say the event is also designed to encourage youth participation in sports, promote healthy living, and support grassroots athletics development in Nigeria.

Ogun Opens Registration for 2027 Hajj Exercise

Aina Obasanjo  The Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has commenced registration for the 2027 Hajj exercise, calling on intending pilgrims to begin preparations for the pilgrimage. Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Taiwo Ajibola, made the announcement while speaking with journalists at the Board's office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.  Alhaji Ajibola said prospective pilgrims are required to make an initial deposit of eight million naira, pending the official Hajj fare to be announced by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. He urged interested applicants to complete their payments early to secure a place for the pilgrimage, noting that the registration exercise is expected to close on or before September 2026. Alhaji Ajibola advised intending pilgrims to visit the Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board at the New Secretariat, Block B, Governor's Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, or contact the Board through its official telephone lines for further enquiries.
