NSC Raises Cash Rewards for Team Nigeria at Glasgow Commonwealth Games

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced an increase in performance bonuses and instant cash rewards for Team Nigeria athletes competing at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Chairman of the Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, said the decision followed a meeting with the Director General aimed at boosting the morale of Nigerian athletes.

Under the revised incentive package, gold medal winners will now receive a total of 10,000 dollars, comprising an instant cash reward of 5,000 dollars and another 5,000 dollars paid directly into their accounts.

Silver medalists will receive a total of 5,000 dollars, including 2,000 dollars as an instant cash reward and 3,000 dollars paid into their accounts, while bronze medalists will earn 3,000 dollars, made up of 1,000 dollars in instant cash and 2,000 dollars credited to their accounts.

Mallam Dikko explained that the previous package for gold medalists was 8,000 dollars, but the instant cash reward was increased after his meeting with the team in Aberdeen to further motivate athletes aiming for gold.

He disclosed that the three Nigerian athletes who won gold on Friday have already received the revised reward of 10,000 dollars each, while the two gold medalists and silver medalists from Saturday have also received their instant cash payments.

The NSC Chairman also announced that coaches whose athletes win gold medals will receive a bonus of 5,000 dollars.

He added that athletes are receiving a daily allowance of 200 dollars, while coaches receive 250 dollars per day.

According to him, the Commission will also provide special bonuses in deserving cases, citing the instant cash reward given to Rilwan Idris, which he said inspired the athlete to improve from bronze medal contention to winning gold.

The National Sports Commission says the enhanced welfare package reflects the Federal Government's commitment to motivating Team Nigeria to achieve greater success at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Ogun Opens Registration for 2027 Hajj Exercise

Aina Obasanjo  The Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has commenced registration for the 2027 Hajj exercise, calling on intending pilgrims to begin preparations for the pilgrimage. Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Taiwo Ajibola, made the announcement while speaking with journalists at the Board's office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.  Alhaji Ajibola said prospective pilgrims are required to make an initial deposit of eight million naira, pending the official Hajj fare to be announced by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. He urged interested applicants to complete their payments early to secure a place for the pilgrimage, noting that the registration exercise is expected to close on or before September 2026. Alhaji Ajibola advised intending pilgrims to visit the Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board at the New Secretariat, Block B, Governor's Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, or contact the Board through its official telephone lines for further enquiries.
