Ogun Earns Global Recognition for Environmental Sustainability

Ogun State has received international recognition from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, UNIDO, for its commitment to circular economy and environmental sustainability.

The recognition comes as the state was selected as one of the core states under Project 220145, Component Two, aimed at advancing Nigeria's green and just transition to net-zero emissions through circular economy initiatives.

Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya, announced this while declaring open a UNIDO workshop on the implementation plan and data management guidelines for the Used Off-Grid Renewable Energy Equipment, otherwise known as the OGREE Waste Management Project, in Abeokuta.

Dr. Oresanya said the recognition reflected Ogun State's readiness to promote resource efficiency, waste reduction, recycling, recovery and green economic growth.






He noted that the state has recorded significant achievements in climate action, including the distribution of more than three thousand biomass smokeless stoves in partnership with the Federal Government to reduce carbon emissions and ease the cost of cooking fuel.

The Environment commissioner also highlighted the introduction of electric motorcycles, Compressed Natural Gas buses, the Blue Box Initiative for household waste segregation, the Plastic-for-Cash programme, community recycling projects, cement industry decarbonisation efforts and senatorial material recovery initiatives.

He urged participants at the workshop, drawn from government agencies, private sector organisations, academia and non-governmental organisations, to contribute actively towards the successful implementation of the project.

Earlier, the National Field Coordinator of the UNIDO Nigeria Office, Ms. Emem Umana, had commended Ogun State for its achievements in circular economy and environmental sustainability, urging the government to sustain the momentum that has earned it international recognition.

Ogun Opens Registration for 2027 Hajj Exercise

Aina Obasanjo  The Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has commenced registration for the 2027 Hajj exercise, calling on intending pilgrims to begin preparations for the pilgrimage. Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Taiwo Ajibola, made the announcement while speaking with journalists at the Board's office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.  Alhaji Ajibola said prospective pilgrims are required to make an initial deposit of eight million naira, pending the official Hajj fare to be announced by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. He urged interested applicants to complete their payments early to secure a place for the pilgrimage, noting that the registration exercise is expected to close on or before September 2026. Alhaji Ajibola advised intending pilgrims to visit the Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board at the New Secretariat, Block B, Governor's Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, or contact the Board through its official telephone lines for further enquiries.
