Ogun Warns Markets Against Illegal Waste Dumping





The Ogun State Government has warned market leaders and traders to stop turning markets into illegal waste dumps or risk having their markets shut down in the interest of public health.

 The Special Adviser to the Governor and Managing Director of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority, OGWAMA, Honourable Farouk Akintunde, gave the warning following the evacuation of long-standing waste heaps at the Farmers Market on Solu Road in Ifo and Mamu Market in Ijebu North Local Government Areas.

Hon. Akintunde described the practice of dumping refuse within market premises instead of at designated collection points as unacceptable. 



He said such actions create environmental hazards and expose food items to contamination, increasing the risk of food poisoning and the spread of diseases.

Hon. Akintunde stressed that markets should be kept clean through proper waste management, noting that they are public places where residents purchase food and other essential items.



The OGWAMA boss added that the state government has consistently engaged market leaders on proper waste disposal and expects full compliance with sanitation regulations.

He warned that the government would not tolerate a return to illegal waste dumping after the recent clean-up exercise, adding that any market found violating waste management rules could be closed to protect public health.

Ogun Opens Registration for 2027 Hajj Exercise

Aina Obasanjo  The Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has commenced registration for the 2027 Hajj exercise, calling on intending pilgrims to begin preparations for the pilgrimage. Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Taiwo Ajibola, made the announcement while speaking with journalists at the Board's office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.  Alhaji Ajibola said prospective pilgrims are required to make an initial deposit of eight million naira, pending the official Hajj fare to be announced by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. He urged interested applicants to complete their payments early to secure a place for the pilgrimage, noting that the registration exercise is expected to close on or before September 2026. Alhaji Ajibola advised intending pilgrims to visit the Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board at the New Secretariat, Block B, Governor's Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, or contact the Board through its official telephone lines for further enquiries.
