AfCFTA Secretary-General Hails Nigeria Customs’ Digital Innovation

 


The Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area, AfCFTA, Wamkele Mene, has commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its digital reforms and indigenous technological innovations.

Mr. Mene said the innovations have the potential to transform customs administration and facilitate trade across Africa.

He stated this during a working visit to the Nigeria Customs Service Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja.

The AfCFTA Secretary-General described the Nigeria Customs Service's technology-driven reforms as a practical African solution to some of the longstanding challenges affecting trade and revenue generation on the continent.

He noted that several African countries still depend on manual customs processes, which, according to him, contribute to revenue leakages, delays at borders and low intra-African trade.

Mr. Mene said Nigeria's technological advancement provides a sustainable model that could be adopted by other African countries.

He expressed the readiness of AfCFTA to collaborate with the Nigeria Customs Service and replicate some of its digital innovations across the continent.

The AfCFTA Secretary-General also described the Nigeria Customs Service data centre as a strategic continental asset that could support countries without the resources to establish similar infrastructure.

Responding, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, appreciated the AfCFTA Secretary-General for recognising the Service's modernisation efforts.

The Comptroller-General reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Customs Service to developing technology-driven solutions that address Africa's peculiar trade needs and support the objectives of the AfCFTA.

He said the Service would continue to expand the frontiers of innovation while learning from global best practices.

Mr. Adeniyi also pledged the Service's continued collaboration with AfCFTA and other African customs administrations to deepen digital integration, facilitate legitimate trade and strengthen regional economic cooperation.

He said the commendation by the continental trade body would further encourage the Nigeria Customs Service to sustain its ongoing modernisation programme.

Ogun Opens Registration for 2027 Hajj Exercise

Aina Obasanjo  The Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has commenced registration for the 2027 Hajj exercise, calling on intending pilgrims to begin preparations for the pilgrimage. Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Taiwo Ajibola, made the announcement while speaking with journalists at the Board's office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.  Alhaji Ajibola said prospective pilgrims are required to make an initial deposit of eight million naira, pending the official Hajj fare to be announced by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. He urged interested applicants to complete their payments early to secure a place for the pilgrimage, noting that the registration exercise is expected to close on or before September 2026. Alhaji Ajibola advised intending pilgrims to visit the Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board at the New Secretariat, Block B, Governor's Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, or contact the Board through its official telephone lines for further enquiries.
