Ogun 2027: Abiodun Enlists Monarchs’ Support for Peaceful Elections

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has urged traditional rulers across the state to mobilise their subjects for peaceful, responsible and informed participation in the 2027 general elections.


Governor Abiodun made the call in Abeokuta while inaugurating the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, as the new Chairman of the Ogun State Council of Obas.


The governor charged the monarchs to use their influence at the grassroots to educate their subjects on the importance of civic participation and discourage violence, thuggery, hatred and other acts capable of threatening the peace of the state before, during and after the elections.



He said the strength of democracy goes beyond the number of votes cast, stressing that citizens must exercise their franchise peacefully, responsibly and with sound judgment.



Governor Abiodun also called on the traditional rulers to sustain their support for security agencies through community mobilisation and intelligence gathering.



He disclosed that security agencies had arrested all suspects linked to the recent abduction of students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade.


The governor assured residents that his administration would continue to deny kidnappers, cultists and other criminals any safe haven in the state.


He further urged traditional rulers to make their palaces centres for peace and conflict resolution by intervening in disputes before they escalate into wider community crises.

Governor Abiodun explained that the distribution of sixty Sports Utility Vehicles to members of the State Council of Obas was aimed at improving their mobility and enabling them to discharge their responsibilities more effectively.

He charged the new Chairman of the Council, Oba Gbadebo, to build on the achievements of his predecessor and strengthen unity among traditional rulers in the state.

Earlier, The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Ganiyu Hamzat, commended the traditional rulers for their contributions to peace, grassroots development and the preservation of Ogun's cultural heritage.

Mr Hamzat also praised the governor for strengthening the relationship between government and the traditional institution.

In his response, the new Chairman of the Council of Obas, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, commended Governor Abiodun for the administration's developmental strides, particularly in infrastructure and other sectors.

The Alake also praised his predecessor, the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, for his contributions to the unity and welfare of traditional rulers during his two-year tenure.

Oba Gbadebo pledged to consolidate the achievements of his predecessor, promote greater unity within the Council and support programmes aimed at improving the welfare and prosperity of the people.

Ogun Opens Registration for 2027 Hajj Exercise

Aina Obasanjo  The Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has commenced registration for the 2027 Hajj exercise, calling on intending pilgrims to begin preparations for the pilgrimage. Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Taiwo Ajibola, made the announcement while speaking with journalists at the Board's office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.  Alhaji Ajibola said prospective pilgrims are required to make an initial deposit of eight million naira, pending the official Hajj fare to be announced by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. He urged interested applicants to complete their payments early to secure a place for the pilgrimage, noting that the registration exercise is expected to close on or before September 2026. Alhaji Ajibola advised intending pilgrims to visit the Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board at the New Secretariat, Block B, Governor's Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, or contact the Board through its official telephone lines for further enquiries.
