Ogun Customs Vows to Make Border Corridors Hostile to Smugglers

The Nigeria Customs Service, NSC, Ogun I Area Command, says it has intercepted smuggled goods worth three-point-five-seven billion naira in Duty Paid Value.



The Acting Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Afeni, who announced this on Thursday during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Idiroko said the seizures followed intensified anti-smuggling operations carried out from June 24 to date.


He listed the seized items to include foreign rice, basmati rice, cannabis, sugar, petroleum products, fertilizer, second-hand clothing, cosmetics, drinks, garments and other prohibited items.




Mr Afeni described smuggling as economic sabotage, warning that the illegal trade undermines local industries, threatens food security and contributes to unemployment.



He also cautioned consumers against smuggled foreign rice, which he said might have been improperly stored or re-bagged under unhygienic conditions.



The Acting Controller disclosed that between January and August this year, the command handed over more than 32,000 parcels of hard drugs and 92 sacks of raw cannabis sativa to the NDLEA.


Announcing that the command had generated over 90 million naira in July from baggage assessments, auctions and other charges stated that the command recorded 10,110 metric tonnes of exports valued at 2.59 billion naira under Free On Board terms.



He identified white talc, crushed thermal coal and CNG as some of the major export commodities and warned smuggling syndicates to desist from illegal activities or face seizure of their goods, impoundment of vehicles and prosecution.



Mr Afeni called on traditional rulers, youth leaders and residents of border communities to support security agencies by providing information on suspicious activities.



In a remark, The NDLEA Deputy Commandant, Idiroko Special Area Command, Mr Wole Fagbohun, who received the seized narcotics, described the handover as evidence of effective inter-agency collaboration.


Mr Fagbohun assured that the substances would be properly documented, investigated and handled according to established procedures.

Ogun Opens Registration for 2027 Hajj Exercise

Aina Obasanjo  The Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has commenced registration for the 2027 Hajj exercise, calling on intending pilgrims to begin preparations for the pilgrimage. Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Taiwo Ajibola, made the announcement while speaking with journalists at the Board's office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.  Alhaji Ajibola said prospective pilgrims are required to make an initial deposit of eight million naira, pending the official Hajj fare to be announced by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. He urged interested applicants to complete their payments early to secure a place for the pilgrimage, noting that the registration exercise is expected to close on or before September 2026. Alhaji Ajibola advised intending pilgrims to visit the Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board at the New Secretariat, Block B, Governor's Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, or contact the Board through its official telephone lines for further enquiries.
