Team Ogun Wins Maiden Southwest U-20 Netball Championship in Abeokuta

 




Team Ogun has emerged champion of the maiden five-day Under 20 Netball Championship held at the Handball Court of the Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Team Ondo came second, while Fortune and Gateway finished third and fourth respectively.

The championship, organised to promote grassroots sports development and expand the game of Netball across the Southwest, featured teams from different parts of the region.

Speaking at the end of the event, the Acting Director of Sports, Mr Oluseyi Sonde, commended the sponsor of the championship, Mr Opeyemi Babalola, for his commitment to grassroots sports development.

Mr Sonde who said that investment in grassroots sports remained critical to discovering and nurturing future sporting talents urged the athletes to embrace sportsmanship, learn from their experiences and remain committed to improving their performances.

The organiser, Coach Oluwatoyin Owooka, said the introduction of Netball in Ogun State was part of efforts to spread the sport across the Southwest and create opportunities for athletes and coaches.

Also speaking, an instructor, Olurebi Olawunmi, said the introduction of Netball to the Ogun State Sports Council was in line with efforts to expand the sport across Nigeria.

She expressed optimism that Ogun State would, within the next five years, produce qualified Netball professionals capable of representing Nigeria at international competitions.

In a remark, the Southwest pioneer Netball coach, Amoo Titilayo, expressed satisfaction with the growing acceptance of the sport in the region.


Some of the participants, Sanusi Iyanuoluwa and Biodun Amadike described the competition as a rewarding experience, despite having only about a week to prepare for the tournament.


At the end of the championship, Haraphat Shittu won the Best Centre award, while Ayantola Marvelous was named Best Defender.

Abushe Silva emerged Highest Goal Scorer, Otubu Favour was named Most Valuable Player, and Obanoyen Bolutife won the Best Winger award.

Team Oyo received the Fair Play Award.

Ogun Opens Registration for 2027 Hajj Exercise

Aina Obasanjo  The Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has commenced registration for the 2027 Hajj exercise, calling on intending pilgrims to begin preparations for the pilgrimage. Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Taiwo Ajibola, made the announcement while speaking with journalists at the Board's office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.  Alhaji Ajibola said prospective pilgrims are required to make an initial deposit of eight million naira, pending the official Hajj fare to be announced by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. He urged interested applicants to complete their payments early to secure a place for the pilgrimage, noting that the registration exercise is expected to close on or before September 2026. Alhaji Ajibola advised intending pilgrims to visit the Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board at the New Secretariat, Block B, Governor's Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, or contact the Board through its official telephone lines for further enquiries.
