As political campaigns gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 governorship election, litigants in four major court cases instituted against the Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, have voluntarily withdrawn and discontinued their suits.
The litigants, who had challenged various aspects of Senator Adeola’s emergence as the Ogun APC governorship candidate, did not state any specific reasons for discontinuing the cases.
However, it was gathered that the litigants had become convinced of the merit of the lawmaker’s gubernatorial candidacy and subsequently resolved to withdraw their legal challenges and support his ambition ahead of the February 2027 general elections.
A statement issued by Senator Adeola’s Media Adviser, High Chief Kayode Odunaro, disclosed that the four cases discontinued by the litigants included Suit No. FHC/AB/CS/87/26, instituted by Professor Awolola Awoniyi pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act 2011 against Senator Adeola, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the All Progressives Congress (APC), Guardian Newspapers Limited and the Inspector General of Police.
The statement also listed Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/844/26, instituted by Arc. Akerele Abiodun John, Ogun State Chairman of the Booth Party; Mr. Adeyemi Solomon Oluwaseyifunmi, Ogun State Chairman of the Young Progressive Party (YPP); Mr. Ola Olamide Emmanuel of the Action Democratic Party (ADP); Mr. Ayinde Oluwayemisi Abiola, a member of the ADP; and Mr. Fesomade Gbadebo, a member of the Labour Party (LP), against Senator Adeola, INEC and the APC.
According to the statement, the other two cases that were discontinued are Suit Nos. FHC/ABJ/CS/989/2026 and FHC/ABJ/CS/884/26.
The two suits were instituted by some of the aforementioned party officials and members, as well as others, including Dr. Olufemi Soluade, Ogun State Chairman of the African Democratic Party (ADP); Mr. Oluwabukola Soyoye Temitope, a member of the Labour Party (LP); and one Ogunremi Abiodu Oluwaseun.
The defendants in the two cases included the APC governorship candidate, INEC, Guardian Newspapers Limited and the Inspector General of Police.
The statement further disclosed that Professor Awoniyi’s case was discontinued on August 24, 2026, while the other three cases were withdrawn on September 7, 2026, in open court.
It added that the various defendants and their counsel were duly informed of the development through Notices of Discontinuance, formally bringing the matters to an end.
Reacting to the development, Senator Adeola welcomed the voluntary withdrawal of the cases, stressing that he remained focused on delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Ogun State.
According to the statement, the senator has also continued his mobilisation efforts across the state and is preparing for a full-scale campaign in the days ahead as the state moves towards the February 2027 general elections.
