The National Sports Commission, NSC, has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, ahead of their opening game at the FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin, Germany.

The African champions will begin their campaign against South Korea today, with the Nigerian side aiming to secure victory and avenge their earlier defeat to the Asian team at the World Cup Qualifying Tournament in France.

D’Tigress, led by Head Coach Rena Wakama, are said to be in high spirits following a series of intensive training camps and preparations ahead of the tournament.

The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, described D’Tigress as a strong tournament team capable of raising their performance when it matters most.

Olopade expressed optimism about the team’s prospects at the World Cup, while commending the players and coaching crew for consistently projecting Nigeria positively through their discipline, conduct and patriotism.

He called on the players to give their best in every game, beginning with the opening fixture against South Korea.

The NSC Director General also urged Nigerians to rally behind the team and continue to support and pray for D’Tigress throughout their World Cup campaign.

The encounter will be the fourth meeting between Nigeria and South Korea, with D’Tigress holding the advantage in their head-to-head record, having recorded two victories against one defeat.

Nigeria is drawn in Group B alongside South Korea, Hungary and France.

The team that finishes top of the group will advance automatically to the quarter-finals, while the second- and third-placed teams will have to win a qualification game to progress to the last eight.

D’Tigress will be hoping to make a strong statement when they take to the court against South Korea in their opening World Cup fixture today.
