Ogun to Invest More in Waste Management, Rejects Monthly Sanitation Return

The Ogun State Government has ruled out the re-introduction of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, saying it will instead strengthen daily waste management across the state.

Governor Dapo Abiodun stated this in Abeokuta while commissioning waste management equipment, operational vehicles and an office block to mark the first six months in office of the Special Adviser and Managing Director of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority, OGWAMA, Farouk Adeniyi Akintunde.

Represented by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya, the governor said Ogun State had moved beyond the monthly sanitation exercise, as residents were now accustomed to maintaining a clean environment daily.

The governor explained that government would rather invest in more compactors and other waste management equipment to enable OGWAMA, in collaboration with accredited Private Sector Participation operators, PSP, to collect and properly dispose of waste generated by households, commercial outlets and industrial facilities.

He said the additional equipment would further strengthen the authority and improve waste collection and disposal across the state.

Governor Abiodun commended residents, Community Development Associations, owners of commercial outlets and captains of industries for their cooperation in maintaining a clean environment.

He also praised the OGWAMA Managing Director, Farouk Adeniyi Akintunde, for his achievements in the last six months despite limited resources, expressing confidence that the agency would perform even better with increased government support.

The governor reaffirmed his administration's commitment to equipping the Ministry of Environment and its agencies, including the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency, OGEPA, and OGWAMA, for improved service delivery.
