The Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, in collaboration with the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, has commenced a step-down training for stakeholders on Greening Schools and Climate Change Education Intervention.
The training, held at the SUBEB Conference Room, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, brought together desk officers and representatives from relevant government ministries, Local Government Education Authorities, School-Based Management Committees, and other stakeholders.
Declaring the training open, the Chairman of SUBEB, Evangelist Olalekan Ifede, represented by the Director, Academic and School Services, Mrs Kehinde Anifowose, said the programme was aimed at strengthening the capacity of key education stakeholders and master trainers for effective implementation of the initiative.
He said the intervention was in line with UBEC's implementation guidelines and the national agenda on climate change education and sustainable development.
The SUBEB Chairman described the Greening Schools and Climate Change Education Intervention as a strategic national initiative designed to mainstream environmental sustainability, climate change education and green school practices into the basic education system.
He urged stakeholders to take collective responsibility for making schools and homes environmentally friendly.
Also speaking, the UBEC Coordinator, Mr Sola Badmus, said the initiative, formerly known as the Agricultural Enterprise Training Programme, was introduced to integrate environmental sustainability into basic education.
According to him, the programme aligns with the National Education Sector Renewal Initiative and Nigeria's commitment to UNESCO.
The facilitator, an Assistant Director with the Federal Ministry of Education, Mr Zange Pius, said the intervention would promote practical learning in areas such as recycling, renewable energy and climate-smart agriculture.
Mr Pius added that the programme would equip learners, teachers and school administrators with the knowledge and skills required to become advocates of environmental sustainability.
He said the training would also focus on monitoring implementation, mobilising community support, strengthening school-community engagement and ensuring compliance with the guidelines.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, the Climate Change Desk Officer from the Ministry of Environment, Mr Wasiu Abajo, commended UBEC and SUBEB for organising the training.
He assured that participants would cascade the knowledge acquired to their various places of assignment.
