UN Chief Calls for Inclusive Digital Future for Global Tourism

The United Nations Secretary-General, Mr António Guterres has called for an open, inclusive and human-centred digital future for the global tourism industry.
Mr Guterres made the call in a message to mark the 2026 World Tourism Day with the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.”
The UN Secretary-General said Artificial Intelligence is transforming the way travellers select destinations, how tourism businesses operate and how travel experiences are developed.
He noted that while AI and digital technology could strengthen small businesses, improve services and create new opportunities, unchecked use of the technology could concentrate tourists in a few destinations and platforms.
Mr Guterres stressed the need for tourism workers, local communities and emerging destinations to participate in shaping the future of the industry.
He called for greater investment in digital skills and wider access to technology, saying innovation should benefit the people and communities that sustain tourism.
The UN chief urged stakeholders to harness digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence to promote sustainable development and ensure that the benefits of tourism are widely shared.
