The Ogun State Government has called for increased support for artists and other practitioners in the creative industry to enable them to contribute more to economic development.
The State Head of Service, Mr. Olanrewaju Saka, made the call at the opening of the Quarterly Visual Arts Exhibition organised by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
He said the exhibition would provide a platform for artists to display their talents, preserve the state's cultural heritage and access opportunities in the creative economy.
Mr. Saka, a trained and certified creative arts instructor, said the creative industry had the potential to promote entrepreneurship, employment and human capital development.
In remark, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. 'Sesan Fagbayi, described the exhibition as a deliberate effort to create regular platforms where creativity could be showcased and connected to economic opportunities.
Hon. Fagbayi urged the public to support artists through the acquisition of their works.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Engineer Quddus Yusuf, said the five-day exhibition featured artworks highlighting Ogun's cultural heritage, with participants drawn from the state, neighbouring states and outside the country.
He listed the publication of OgunRewa cultural magazine and the revival of Artists Night among initiatives aimed at promoting arts and culture in the state.
Mrs. Busola Ogunyemi, a former Special Adviser in the Ministry, said the arts could help tackle youth unemployment by encouraging entrepreneurship.
Veteran actor, Yomi Fash-Lanso, appealed for sustained government support for the creative sector to keep practitioners motivated.
