All Stars Football Club Abeokuta has condemned the reported destruction of facilities at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Kuto, Abeokuta, allegedly by supporters of MC Alger during a CAF Champions League encounter against Rangers International Football Club of Enugu.
The President of the club, Alhaji Waheed Adeoye Lawal said in a statement in Abeokuta the club described the incident as disappointing and unacceptable, noting that the destruction of sporting infrastructure undermines the principles of sportsmanship, discipline and fair play.
The incident reportedly occurred after Rangers International FC defeated the Algerian side two goals to nil.
Alhaji Lawal stressed that football supporters must learn to accept the outcome of matches peacefully, irrespective of whether their teams win or lose.
He noted that the MKO Abiola Sports Arena remains an important sporting facility in Ogun State and Nigeria, the reason why CAF approved its usage for continental matches, adding that any damage to such infrastructure constitutes a loss to the sporting community, the people of the state and the Nigerians at large.
Alhaji Lawal called on the Confederation of African Football, CAF, the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, match organisers and security agencies to investigate the incident, establish the extent of the damage and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to prevent a recurrence.
The President of Abeokuta All Stars Football Club Abeokuta also urged football authorities to strengthen stadium security and crowd-control measures during international competitions.
He emphasised that sporting events should promote unity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence, rather than violence and destruction of public facilities.
Alhaji Lawal reaffirmed the club's commitment to promoting discipline, sportsmanship and football development in Ogun State and Nigeria.
