The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to creating an enabling environment for investment and sustainable development in Nigeria’s livestock sector.
Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, stated this during a working visit to CWAY Nigeria Dairy and Food Products Limited in Ogere, Ogun State.
The Minister commended CWAY for its investment in Nigeria, describing private-sector participation as critical to the growth of the livestock industry.
Alhaji Maiha said the visit was aimed at identifying challenges confronting businesses and exploring practical solutions to strengthen the sector.
He stressed the need for collaboration among the Federal and State Governments, private investors and other stakeholders to promote economic growth, create jobs and enhance food security.
Also speaking, Ogun State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Bolu Owotomo said the State Government had introduced various initiatives to boost agricultural production and support farmers and investors.
Hon Owotomo cited the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with poultry farmers for the utilisation of poultry pens with a combined capacity of one hundred and forty thousand birds.
The Commissioner also mentioned the establishment of the Ogun State Farmers Information Management System, OGFIMS, aimed at improving farmers’ access to information and opportunities.
He assured that Ogun State would continue to collaborate with the Federal Government and private-sector operators to address challenges affecting the livestock industry.
In his remarks, CWAY General Manager, Mr. Shrek Wang, appreciated the Minister and the Ogun State Government for the visit and pledged the company’s continued investment in Nigeria.
He said CWAY’s operations in dairy management contribute significantly to the development of the livestock and agricultural value chains.
Meanwhile, the Minister has called for stronger collaboration between the Federal Government and the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, to promote research, innovation and commercialisation in the livestock sector.
Alhaji Maiha made the call when he visited the university as part of his working visit to Ogun State.
He said Nigeria had enormous potential in livestock production but needed to move beyond primary production to processing, value addition and commercialisation.
The Minister identified improved animal breeds, genetics, feed development and animal health as areas requiring greater research attention.
He said the Federal Government was developing interventions to strengthen processing and value addition, create employment and improve returns to livestock producers.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB, Professor Olusolas Kehinde, assured the Minister of the university’s readiness to partner the government and other stakeholders in developing the livestock sector.
Professor Kehinde also said the university was benefiting from improved electricity supply following recent reforms in the power sector, noting that the development would enhance teaching, research and other academic activities.
