The President of All Stars Football Club, Abeokuta, Alhaji Waheed Adeoye Lawal, has felicitated with Nigerians at home and abroad on the occasion of the nation’s Independence Day, while calling on all stakeholders to unite in their commitment to the development and advancement of sports, particularly football, in Nigeria.
In his Independence Day message, Alhaji Lawal who is also the YSFON chairman in Ogun state described sports as a powerful instrument for national unity, youth development, talent discovery, economic empowerment and international recognition.
He stressed that Nigeria possesses an abundance of sporting talent, especially in football, but noted that the country can only fully harness this potential through a coordinated and sustained partnership among government, football administrators, clubs, corporate organisations, former players, coaches, grassroots developers, the media and other relevant stakeholders.
According to him, the development of Nigerian football should not be left to government alone, but must be approached as a collective national responsibility.
The All Stars FC President advocated greater investment in grassroots football, improved sporting infrastructure, proper development programmes for young players, capacity building for coaches and administrators, and stronger partnerships between the public and private sectors.
He also emphasised the importance of creating an environment where retired and former footballers can continue to contribute their experience and expertise to the development of younger generations.
Alhaji Lawal urged football clubs and administrators to embrace professionalism, transparency, collaboration and long-term planning, stressing that the success of Nigerian football should ultimately be measured not only by trophies but also by the quality of opportunities created for young people.
He called on corporate organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to increase their support for sports development, noting that strategic investment in football can contribute to job creation, youth empowerment and community development.
While congratulating Nigerians on the Independence Day celebration, the All Stars FC President encouraged citizens to continue to promote peace, unity and patriotism.
