OGUN GOVERNMENT DEFENDS PROPOSED SEVEN-BILLION-DOLLAR DEEP SEAPORT PROJECT
The Ogun State Government has faulted the description of the proposed seven-billion-dollar Gateway Deep Seaport project as another broken promise by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, senatorial candidate for Ogun East, Alhaji Abdul-Hameed Omotayo.
The government says the proposed investment is backed by formal agreements with international port operator, DP World, signed in Paris on September 24, 2026.
In a statement, the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Mr Kayode Akinmade, described the PDP candidate's remark as misleading and an attempt to politicise a major economic initiative.
Mr Akinmade said the agreements cover the proposed Gateway Deep Seaport and Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, which are expected to boost maritime activities, attract investments and create employment opportunities.
He cited a statement from the Presidency indicating that the project could attract an initial investment of more than seven billion dollars and generate about fifty thousand direct jobs.
The government, however, acknowledged that the signing of investment agreements is only one stage of the process, with financing arrangements, regulatory approvals and construction still required for the project to become operational.
On infrastructure development in Ogun East, Mr Akinmade said the Abiodun administration had constructed and rehabilitated more than 243 kilometres of roads in the district since 2019.
He listed the Ijebu-Ode–Mojoda–Epe Road, Sagamu–Iperu–Ode–Sapaade Road, Ejirin–Idowa–Ibefun–Itokin Road and Imodi–Imosan Road among the projects executed by the administration.
The government also cited interventions in education and primary healthcare, as well as the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport at Iperu-Remo, as part of its development record.
Mr Akinmade urged political stakeholders to assess government policies and projects based on verifiable facts rather than partisan considerations.
He maintained that the proposed deep seaport and special economic zone could strengthen Ogun State's industrial base, improve trade and logistics, and expand economic opportunities if successfully implemented.
