As the world marks the 2026 World Food Day, the Peoples Democratic Party's candidate for the House of Representatives for Abeokuta North, Odeda and Obafemi Owode Federal Constituency, Architect Dele Olaleye has called for increased investment in agricultural innovation and sustainable food production to address food insecurity and rising food prices in Nigeria.

Architect Olaleye who made call in a message in Abeokuta to commemorate the day, said agricultural development remained crucial to economic growth, job creation and the well-being of Nigerians.

He noted that the theme of this year's celebration, “Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow,” underscored the need for practical solutions to challenges confronting farmers and the nation's food supply chain.

The PDP candidate identified high agricultural input costs, inadequate access to finance, poor storage facilities, transportation difficulties and limited access to modern farming technologies as some of the major obstacles affecting food production.

He called for the adoption of improved seedlings, irrigation systems, climate-smart farming methods, digital agricultural services and modern post-harvest management practices to increase productivity and minimise food losses.

Architect Olaleye also advocated greater support for smallholder farmers, women and young people, stressing that agriculture should be developed into a profitable venture capable of generating employment and improving rural livelihoods.

He said Abeokuta North, Odeda and Obafemi Owode Federal Constituency had considerable agricultural potential that could be harnessed through better rural infrastructure, affordable farm inputs, agricultural cooperatives, processing facilities and improved access to markets.

The candidate urged governments at all levels, private investors, agricultural institutions and farming communities to strengthen collaboration towards achieving sustainable food security.

He  called for policies that would reduce food waste, improve rural roads and storage facilities, support agricultural research and make nutritious food more affordable to Nigerian households.

Architect Olaleye reaffirmed the importance of effective legislative representation in promoting agricultural development, empowering rural communities and creating economic opportunities for farmers and young entrepreneurs.

He urged Nigerians to support local farmers, minimise food waste and embrace sustainable agricultural practices, noting that collective efforts were necessary to ensure a future in which every household had access to safe, affordable and nutritious food.
